Smock Summary

Smock is a borough located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Smock was founded in 1872 by John Smock, a local coal miner. The town was originally known as Smockville, but the name was changed to Smock in 1876. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1891.
Smock was a coal mining town for many years, and the coal industry was the main source of employment for the town's residents. The town was also home to several other industries, including a brickyard, a sawmill, and a tannery.

Geography

Smock is located at 39°56'45"N 79°45'45"W (39.94583, -79.76250). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Smock is largely based on the coal mining industry. The town is home to several coal mines, including the Smock Mine, which is the largest in the area. The town also has several other businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 305 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,817.2 people per square mile (701.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 776.3 per square mile (299.7/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $27,500, and the median income for a family was $32,500. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $14,845. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
