History
The area that is now Portland was first settled in 1737 by German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Hoffman’s Ferry”, named after the ferry service that operated on the Lehigh River. In 1810, the town was officially incorporated as the Borough of Portland.
The town was an important stop on the Lehigh Canal, which was built in the early 19th century to transport coal from the Lehigh Valley to Philadelphia. The canal was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it provided a reliable means of transportation for goods and people.
The town was also an important stop on the Lehigh Valley Railroad, which was built in the mid-19th century. The railroad provided a direct connection to Philadelphia and New York City, and was a major factor in the growth of the town.

The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
