Oakland CDP Lawrence County Summary
Oakland Cdp is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the northwest corner of the county, approximately 10 miles south of the city of New Castle. The population of Oakland Cdp was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Oakland Cdp is located at 40°51'17" North, 80°20'45" West (40.854722, -80.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
History
Oakland Cdp was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from Scotland and Ireland. The area was originally known as "Oakland Crossroads" due to its location at the intersection of two major roads. The name was later shortened to "Oakland". The area was officially incorporated as a borough in 1876.
The Oakland Cdp area was home to several industries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including a brickyard, a sawmill, and a tannery. The area also had several churches, a school, and a post office.
In the mid-20th century, the area began to decline as industry moved away and the population began to decline. The borough was dissolved in the late 1960s and the area was re-designated as a census-designated place (CDP).
Economy
Oakland Cdp is primarily a residential area, with most of its residents commuting to nearby cities for work. The area does have some small businesses, including a few restaurants, a convenience store, and a few auto repair shops.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,417.3 people per square mile (546.7/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 617.3/sq mi (238.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
