Norwood Borough is a small borough located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the county, just north of the city of Philadelphia. The borough is bordered by the boroughs of Prospect Park, Ridley Park, and Ridley Township. The population of Norwood Borough was 4,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Norwood Borough was originally part of the larger Ridley Township, which was established in 1687. The area was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of Quakers from England. The area was known as “Ridley Park” until 1876, when it was incorporated as the Borough of Norwood. The name was chosen to honor the Norwood family, who had been prominent in the area since the early 1800s.
The borough was primarily an agricultural community until the late 1800s, when the Pennsylvania Railroad began to expand its lines through the area. This brought an influx of new residents and businesses to the borough, and it quickly became a popular commuter suburb of Philadelphia.

Geography

Norwood Borough is located at 39°53'N 75°17'W (39.88, -75.28). It is situated in the southeastern corner of Delaware County, just north of the city of Philadelphia. The borough is bordered by the boroughs of Prospect Park, Ridley Park, and Ridley Township.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of which is land.

Economy

Norwood Borough is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to jobs in Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. The borough does have a few small businesses, including a few restaurants, a grocery store, and a few retail stores.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 4,845 people, 1,945 households, and 1,323 families residing in the borough. The population density was 6,945.3 people per square mile (2,683.2/km2). There were 2,072 housing units at an average density of 2,945.3 per square mile (1,133.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 87.2% White, 6.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.

The per capita income for the borough was $25,938.
