New Brighton borough Summary
New Brighton Borough is a borough located in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located along the Ohio River, approximately 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. The population was 3,845 at the 2010 census.
History
New Brighton was founded in 1832 by William Robinson, a settler from New Brighton, England. The town was originally known as "Robinson's Landing" and was later renamed "New Brighton" in 1836. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1867.
New Brighton was an important industrial center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was home to several steel mills, coal mines, and other industries. The town was also home to the New Brighton Car Works, which produced streetcars and trolleys for the Pittsburgh Railways Company.
Geography
New Brighton is located at 40°41'17"N 80°19'17"W (40.6879, -80.3214). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
New Brighton's economy is largely based on manufacturing and services. The town is home to several factories and industrial plants, including a steel mill, a paper mill, and a plastics plant. The town also has several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,845 people, 1,619 households, and 1,039 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,093.3 people per square mile (1,192.2/km2). There were 1,741 housing units at an average density of 1,400.2 per square mile (541.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 1,619 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $16,845. About 9.2% of families and 11.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
