History

The area that is now Mechanicsville Borough was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The first settlers were the families of John and Jacob Schaeffer, who arrived in 1808. The Schaeffers built a sawmill and gristmill on the banks of the Schuylkill River, which became the center of the community. The area was originally known as Schaefferstown, but the name was changed to Mechanicsville in 1845.
The borough was officially incorporated in 1876. At the time, the population was approximately 500 people. The town was named after the Mechanicsville Iron Works, which was established in 1845. The iron works was a major employer in the area, and it helped to spur the growth of the borough.
