Maytown is a small borough located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is situated along the Susquehanna River, approximately 10 miles east of the city of Lancaster. The population of Maytown was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Maytown was founded in 1750 by a group of German settlers who had recently arrived in the area. The town was named after the May family, who were among the first settlers. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon developed into a small industrial center. The first industry in Maytown was a grist mill, which was built in 1760. The mill was followed by a sawmill, a tannery, and a distillery.
In the late 19th century, the town experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The railroad arrived in 1872, and the town was incorporated in 1876. The railroad allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area. The town also became a popular tourist destination, as it was located near several popular attractions, such as the Susquehanna River and the nearby Amish Country.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,822.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $19,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 5.3% of those age 65 or over.
