Hallam Borough is a borough located in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the York-Hanover Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Hallam Borough was founded in 1887 by a group of local businessmen. The borough was named after Hallam Township, which was named after the English town of Hallamshire. The borough was incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Hallam Borough is located at 39°59'45"N 76°41'45"W (39.995833, -76.695833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Hallam Borough is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The borough is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,845 people, 1,945 households, and 1,323 families residing in the borough. The population density was 6,845.3 people per square mile (2,637.2/km2). There were 2,039 housing units at an average density of 2,867.2 per square mile (1,106.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
