Greensboro borough Summary

Greensboro Borough is a small borough located in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the south-central part of the state, approximately 20 miles south of Chambersburg and about 40 miles northwest of Gettysburg. The borough is part of the Chambersburg-Waynesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Greensboro Borough was 1,093.

Geography

Greensboro Borough is located at 39°51'45" North, 77°37'45" West (39.8625, -77.6292). It has a total area of 0.3 square miles, all of which is land. The borough is situated in the Cumberland Valley, which is part of the Ridge and Valley physiographic province of the Appalachian Mountains. The borough is bordered to the north by Greene Township, to the east by Letterkenny Township, to the south by Hamilton Township, and to the west by Guilford Township.

History

Greensboro Borough was founded in 1817 by John Green, a Revolutionary War veteran. The borough was originally known as Green's Borough, but the name was changed to Greensboro in 1820. The borough was incorporated in 1845.
Greensboro Borough was an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. The borough was also the site of a major battle during the Gettysburg Campaign in 1863.
