Gratz borough Summary

Gratz Borough is a small borough located in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the Susquehanna Valley, approximately 10 miles northwest of Harrisburg, the state capital. The borough is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Gratz Borough was 1,093.

History

Gratz Borough was founded in 1817 by John Gratz, a German immigrant who had settled in the area in 1790. The borough was named after him. Gratz was originally part of Lykens Township, but was incorporated as a borough in 1851.
The borough was an important center of commerce in the 19th century, with several mills and factories located in the area. The Gratz Bank, founded in 1864, was the first bank in the county. The borough was also home to several churches, including the Gratz United Methodist Church, which was founded in 1820.

Gratz Borough is located at 40°30'N 76°50'W. It has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of which is land. The borough is situated in the Susquehanna Valley, approximately 10 miles northwest of Harrisburg. It is bordered by Lykens Township to the north, Wiconisco Township to the east, and Washington Township to the south and west.
The borough is located in the Appalachian Mountains, and is part of the Ridge and Valley physiographic province. The terrain is mostly rolling hills, with some flat areas along the Susquehanna River. The climate is humid continental, with cold winters and hot, humid summers.
