Berlin Borough is a borough located in the southeastern corner of Adams County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Gettysburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Berlin Borough was founded in 1764 by German immigrants who had settled in the area. The borough was originally known as East Berlin, and was part of the larger town of Berlin, which was divided into East and West Berlin in 1814. The two towns were reunited in 1854, and the name was changed to Berlin Borough.
Geography
Berlin Borough is located at 39°48'45"N 77°7'45"W (39.812500, -77.129250). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,619.3 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 776 housing units at an average density of 1,097.2 per square mile (422.3/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.90% White, 0.43% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.71% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
