Chewton Summary
Chewton is a small borough located in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated along the banks of the Shenango River, approximately 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Chewton was founded in 1832 by William Chew, a local landowner. The town was originally known as Chewtonville, but the name was changed to Chewton in 1854. The town was incorporated in 1867.
Chewton was an important stop on the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad, which ran through the town from 1879 to the late 1950s. The railroad brought economic growth to the area, and the town became a center for the coal and lumber industries.
Geography
Chewton is located at 40°51'17"N 80°20'45"W (40.854722, -80.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Chewton's economy is largely based on the service industry. The town is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The town also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small factories located in the area.

The racial makeup of the borough was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
