New Providence borough Summary

New Providence Borough is a small borough located in Union County, New Jersey. It is situated in the northern part of the state, about 20 miles west of New York City. The borough is bordered by Berkeley Heights, Chatham Borough, and Summit. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a total population of 12,171.

History

The area that is now New Providence Borough was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The area was part of Elizabethtown Township until 1759, when it was incorporated as the Township of New Providence. In 1869, the Township of New Providence was incorporated as a borough.

Geography

New Providence Borough is located at 40°41'17" North, 74°24'45" West (40.688, -74.412). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.7 square miles, all of which is land.
The borough is located in the Watchung Mountains, a range of low mountains in northern New Jersey. The borough is located on the Passaic River, which forms its western border.

Economy

New Providence Borough is a primarily residential community, with a few small businesses located in the downtown area. The borough is home to several corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. and the financial services company Prudential Financial.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 12,171 people, 4,541 households, and 3,541 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,541.2 people per square mile. There were 4,717 housing units at an average density of 1,741.7 per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 87.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 7.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.3% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 29.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $117,945, and the median income for a family was $133,917. Males had a median income of $90,917 versus $60,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $54,945. About 1.7% of families and 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.2% of those under age 18 and 3.2% of those age 65 or over.
