Caldwell borough Summary

Caldwell Borough is a small borough located in Essex County, New Jersey. It is situated in the northern part of the state, about 20 miles west of New York City. The borough is bordered by the towns of West Caldwell, North Caldwell, and Verona. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a total population of 7,822.

History

The area that is now Caldwell Borough was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The area was part of the Horseneck Tract, which was a parcel of land that was deeded to settlers in 1676. The area was known as Horseneck until 1798, when it was incorporated as Caldwell Township.
In 1892, the area was incorporated as a borough. The borough was named after James Caldwell, a local minister who was killed during the Revolutionary War.

Geography

Caldwell Borough is located at 40°49'17" North, 74°17'45" West (40.8214, -74.2958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.7 square miles, all of which is land.
The borough is located in the northern part of Essex County, about 20 miles west of New York City. It is bordered by the towns of West Caldwell, North Caldwell, and Verona.

Economy

The economy of Caldwell Borough is largely based on retail and services. The borough is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and professional services. The borough also has a few larger employers, such as a hospital and a college.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 7,822 people, 2,945 households, and 1,945 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,619.2 people per square mile. There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 1,817.3 per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 2,945 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 21.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $68,958, and the median income for a family was $83,929. Males had a median income of $54,912 versus $41,919 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $33,945. About 2.7% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
