History

Warren County was formed in 1779 from parts of Bute and Granville counties. It was named for Joseph Warren, a Revolutionary War hero who was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The county was originally part of the Roanoke River basin, and was home to many Native American tribes, including the Tuscarora, Meherrin, and Occaneechi.
In the early 19th century, the county was home to a large number of plantations, and the economy was largely based on agriculture. The county was also home to several ironworks, which produced iron for use in the Civil War. After the war, the county's economy shifted to lumber and tobacco production.
