Stokes County Summary
Stokes County is located in the northwestern part of North Carolina, and is part of the Piedmont Triad region. It is bordered by Forsyth County to the north, Rockingham County to the east, Surry County to the south, and Yadkin County to the west. The county seat is Danbury, and the largest city is King. The county was formed in 1789 from Surry County and is named for John Stokes, a Revolutionary War hero.
Geography
Stokes County covers an area of 437 square miles, of which 434 square miles is land and 3 square miles is water. The terrain is mostly rolling hills, with the Sauratown Mountains in the northwest corner of the county. The county is drained by the Yadkin River and its tributaries, including the Dan River, the Fisher River, and the Little Fisher River. The county is home to several state parks, including Hanging Rock State Park, Pilot Mountain State Park, and Stone Mountain State Park.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, Stokes County had a population of 47,401. The racial makeup of the county was 87.3% White, 9.2% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
The median household income was $41,945 and the median family income was $50,945. The per capita income was $20,945. About 14.2% of the population was below the poverty line.
Economy
Stokes County's economy is largely based on agriculture, with tobacco, corn, and soybeans being the main crops. The county is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Hanesbrands, Inc., which produces clothing and apparel, and Tyson Foods, which produces poultry products. Tourism is also an important part of the economy, with the county's state parks and other attractions drawing visitors from across the region.
History
Stokes County was formed in 1789 from Surry County. The county was named for John Stokes, a Revolutionary War hero. The county seat was originally Germanton, but was moved to Danbury in 1792.
During the Civil War, Stokes County was a center of Confederate activity. The county was the site of several skirmishes, including the Battle of Germanton in 1863.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Stokes County was a center of the textile industry. Several mills were built in the county, and the industry provided jobs for many of the county's residents.
