Martin County Summary
Martin County is a county located in the northeastern part of the state of North Carolina. It is part of the Roanoke Rapids, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 24,505. The county seat is Williamston.
History
Martin County was formed in 1774 from the eastern part of Halifax County. It was named for Josiah Martin, the last royal governor of North Carolina. The county was originally part of the Tuscarora Indian Nation, and the first European settlers were mostly Scots-Irish immigrants.
In the early 19th century, the county was home to a large number of Quakers, who had migrated from Pennsylvania. The county was also home to a large number of free African Americans, who had been freed by their owners.
During the Civil War, Martin County was a hotbed of Confederate activity. The county was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Williamston in 1862.
Geography
Martin County is located in the northeastern part of North Carolina. It is bordered by Bertie County to the north, Washington County to the east, Pitt County to the south, and Halifax County to the west. The county is located in the Coastal Plain region of the state, and is mostly flat. The Roanoke River forms the western border of the county.
The county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 437 square miles is land and 4.2 square miles is water.

The economy of Martin County is largely based on agriculture. The county is home to a number of large farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, cotton, and tobacco. The county is also home to a number of poultry farms, which produce eggs and chicken.

The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.

About 17.2% of families and 21.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 17.2% of those age 65 or over.
