Hertford County is a county located in the northeastern part of the state of North Carolina. It is part of the Inner Banks region and is bordered by Chowan County to the north, Gates County to the east, Bertie County to the south, and Northampton County to the west. The racial makeup of the county was 57.2% White, 39.2% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. 3.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

About 22.2% of families and 25.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 36.2% of those under age 18 and 22.2% of those age 65 or over.

Hertford County's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The county is home to several large farms, including the Ahoskie Peanut Company, which is the largest peanut processor in the state. Other agricultural products include corn, soybeans, cotton, and tobacco.
