Davidson County Summary

Davidson County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the population was 162,878. Its county seat is Lexington. Davidson County is included in the Winston-Salem, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point, NC Combined Statistical Area.

History

Davidson County was formed in 1822 from Rowan County. It was named for General William Lee Davidson, a Revolutionary War general killed at the Battle of Cowan's Ford on the Catawba River in 1781.

Geography

Davidson County is located in the central Piedmont region of North Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 567 square miles (1,470 km2), of which 563 square miles (1,460 km2) is land and 4.2 square miles (11 km2) (0.7%) is water.
The county is divided into two distinct regions by the Uwharrie Mountains, a low mountain range that runs through the county from northeast to southwest. The Uwharries are the oldest mountain range in North America and offer spectacular views. The highest point in the county is High Rock Mountain at 1,119 feet (341 m).

Economy

The economy of Davidson County is largely based on agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. The county is home to several large employers, including Thomasville Furniture Industries, Davidson County Community College, and the North Carolina Zoo.
Agriculture is a major part of the county's economy, with tobacco, corn, soybeans, and hay being the major crops. Livestock production is also important, with beef cattle, dairy cows, and hogs being the major animals raised.
Manufacturing is also an important part of the county's economy, with furniture, textiles, and automotive parts being the major products.
Tourism is also an important part of the county's economy, with the North Carolina Zoo, High Rock Lake, and the Uwharrie National Forest being the major attractions.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 162,878 people, 63,945 households, and 44,945 families residing in the county. The population density was 288.7 people per square mile (111.6/km2). There were 70,919 housing units at an average density of 125.7 per square mile (48.5/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 81.2% White, 14.3% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. 4.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
In terms of ancestry, 16.2% were American, 11.2% were English, 10.2% were German, and 8.7% were Irish.
The median income for a household in the county was $41,845 and the median income for a family was $50,890. Males had a median income of $37,845 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the county was $20,945. About 10.2% of families and 13.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
