Caldwell County Summary
Caldwell County is located in the western part of North Carolina, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It is bordered by Alexander, Burke, Catawba, Watauga, and Wilkes counties. The county seat is Lenoir, and the largest city is Hudson. The county was formed in 1841 from parts of Burke and Wilkes counties and was named for Joseph Caldwell, the first president of the University of North Carolina.

Caldwell County covers an area of 437 square miles, with a population of 83,029 as of the 2020 census. The terrain is mostly hilly, with elevations ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 feet. The county is drained by the Catawba River and its tributaries, including the Yadkin River. The county is home to several state parks, including South Mountains State Park, which is located in the southern part of the county.
