Wyoming Summary

Wyoming, Ohio is a city located in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cincinnati and is part of the Cincinnati Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,428 at the 2010 census.

History

Wyoming was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from New England. The settlers named the town after Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, which was named after the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania. The town was incorporated in 1868.
Wyoming was originally a farming community, but it began to grow in the late 19th century when the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railroad was built through the town. This allowed for the transportation of goods and people to and from the city of Cincinnati.
In the early 20th century, Wyoming became a popular residential area for wealthy Cincinnatians. The town was known for its large homes and beautiful gardens.

Geography

Wyoming is located at 39°13'25" North, 84°30'45" West (39.223611, -84.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Wyoming is a primarily residential community, with most of its residents commuting to work in Cincinnati. The city does have some small businesses, including a few restaurants, a grocery store, and a few retail stores.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,428 people, 3,541 households, and 2,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,006.2 people per square mile (774.2/km2). There were 3,817 housing units at an average density of 912.2 per square mile (352.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $68,945, and the median income for a family was $81,945. Males had a median income of $60,000 versus $41,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $35,945. About 2.7% of families and 3.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
