Sparta Summary

Sparta is a small village located in the state of Ohio, in the United States. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state, in the county of Greene. The village is located on the banks of the Little Miami River, and is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The population of Sparta was 1,845 at the 2000 census.

History

Sparta was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from New Jersey. The village was named after the ancient Greek city-state of Sparta, and was originally known as Sparta Station. The village was incorporated in 1845, and was the first village in Greene County to be incorporated.
The village was an important stop on the Little Miami Railroad, which connected Cincinnati to Springfield. The railroad was an important factor in the growth of the village, and it was the first village in Greene County to have a railroad station.
The village was also home to a number of mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. These mills provided employment for many of the villagers, and helped to make Sparta an important economic center in the area.

Geography

Sparta is located at 39°45'17" North, 83°59'45" West (39.754722, -83.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Sparta is a small village, and its economy is largely based on agriculture and small businesses. The village is home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants.
The village is also home to a number of small manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a printing company. These companies provide employment for many of the villagers, and help to keep the local economy strong.

Demographics

As of the 2000 census, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 517 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.2/km2). There were 762 housing units at an average density of 627.2 per square mile (242.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $18,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 6.3% of those age 65 or over.
