Seaman Summary
Seaman is a small village located in Adams County, Ohio, United States. It is situated along the Ohio River, approximately 25 miles east of Cincinnati. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Seaman was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as “New Germany” and was later renamed Seaman in 1845 after a local landowner, John Seaman. The village was incorporated in 1848.
In the late 1800s, Seaman was a thriving river port town. The Ohio River was a major transportation route for goods and people, and Seaman was a popular stop for steamboats. The village was also home to several businesses, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the early 1900s, the Ohio River began to decline in importance as a transportation route, and Seaman’s economy shifted to agriculture. The village was home to several dairy farms, as well as a few small businesses.

Seaman is located at 39°25′N 83°45′W (39.4167, -83.7500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,822.5 people per square mile (704.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 785.0 per square mile (303.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845.
