Niles Summary

Niles, Ohio is a city located in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metropolitan statistical area. The population was 19,266 at the 2010 census.

History

Niles was founded in 1806 by James Heaton, who was a surveyor working for the Connecticut Land Company. The town was named after Hezekiah Niles, the editor of the Niles Register, a Baltimore newspaper. The town was originally a stop on the Underground Railroad, and was home to abolitionist John Brown.
In the late 19th century, Niles was a major center of steel production. The city was home to several steel mills, including the Republic Steel Corporation, which was the largest steel mill in the world at the time. The steel industry in Niles declined in the mid-20th century, and the city has since shifted its focus to other industries.

Geography

Niles is located at 41°10'25" North, 80°45'17" West (41.173611, -80.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all land.

Niles is home to several major employers, including Delphi Automotive, which manufactures automotive parts, and the Niles-McKinley School District, which employs over 1,000 people. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

As of the 2010 census, there were 19,266 people, 8,093 households, and 4,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,346.2 people per square mile (905.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 8,093 households, out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% were non-families. 34.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,845, and the median income for a family was $37,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $22,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 11.7% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.2% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
