Moraine Summary
Moraine, Ohio is a city located in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 6,307 at the 2010 census.
History
Moraine was founded in the early 1900s as a small farming community. The city was named after the nearby Moraine State Park, which was named for the glacial moraines that were left behind by the glaciers that once covered the area. The city was incorporated in 1941.
In the 1950s, the city began to experience rapid growth due to the expansion of the nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This growth continued into the 1960s and 1970s, and the city's population peaked at over 10,000 in the 1980s.
Geography
Moraine is located at 39°44'17" North, 84°14'17" West (39.738, -84.238). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
Moraine is home to several large employers, including the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the Dayton International Airport, and the Moraine Assembly Plant, which is owned by General Motors. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 6,307 people, 2,541 households, and 1,619 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,500.3 people per square mile (579.2/km2). There were 2,817 housing units at an average density of 676.2 per square mile (261.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 13.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
