Mayfield Heights Summary

Mayfield Heights is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland and is located approximately 8 miles east of downtown Cleveland. The population was 18,827 at the 2010 census.

History

Mayfield Heights was originally part of Mayfield Township, which was established in 1815. The township was named after the Mayfield family, who were among the first settlers in the area. In the late 19th century, the area began to develop as a residential suburb of Cleveland. In 1921, the village of Mayfield Heights was incorporated. The village was named after the Mayfield family and the nearby Heights of Mayfield. In 1951, the village was incorporated as a city.

Geography

Mayfield Heights is located at 41°30′N 81°30′W (41.50, -81.50). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.45 square miles (11.54 km2), of which 4.43 square miles (11.48 km2) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.06 km2) is water.

Economy

Mayfield Heights is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Cleveland Clinic, the world-renowned medical center.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 18,827 people, 8,072 households, and 4,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,241.3 people per square mile (1,633.2/km2). There were 8,717 housing units at an average density of 1,964.3 per square mile (757.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 8,072 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $56,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
