Kettering Summary

Kettering, Ohio is a city located in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Dayton and is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 56,163 at the 2010 census, making it the largest suburb of Dayton.

History

Kettering was founded in 1841 by Jonathan Kettering, a farmer from Pennsylvania. He purchased 1,200 acres of land and named the area after himself. The area was originally known as Van Buren, but the name was changed to Kettering in 1855.
The city was incorporated in 1955 and has since grown to become one of the largest suburbs of Dayton. The city is home to many large employers, including the Kettering Medical Center, the Dayton International Airport, and the University of Dayton.

Geography

Kettering is located at 39°41'17" North, 84°10'45" West (39.688, -84.179). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Kettering is home to many large employers, including the Kettering Medical Center, the Dayton International Airport, and the University of Dayton. The city also has a strong manufacturing base, with companies such as Delphi Automotive, NCR Corporation, and Reynolds and Reynolds all having a presence in the city.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 56,163 people, 22,845 households, and 14,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,491.3 people per square mile (1,349.2/km2). There were 24,811 housing units at an average density of 1,539.2 per square mile (593.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.2% White, 11.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 22,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $48,919, and the median income for a family was $59,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,890 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
