Irondale Summary

Irondale is a small village located in Jefferson County, Ohio, United States. It is situated along the Ohio River, approximately 20 miles east of Steubenville. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Irondale was first settled in the early 1800s. The village was originally known as Ironville, and was named for the iron ore that was mined in the area. The village was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 1800s, Irondale was a major producer of iron ore. The ore was shipped to Pittsburgh and other cities for use in steel production. The iron ore industry declined in the early 1900s, and the village's economy shifted to agriculture.

Geography

Irondale is located at 40°25'25" North, 80°45'45" West (40.423, -80.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Irondale is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and wheat. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,817.3 people per square mile (700.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 763.3 per square mile (294.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
