Glenwillow Summary
Glenwillow is a village located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland and is part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Area. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census.
History
Glenwillow was founded in 1815 by John and Mary Willoughby, who purchased the land from the Connecticut Land Company. The village was originally known as Willoughby’s Corners, but was later changed to Glenwillow in 1868. The name was derived from the Willoughby family’s farm, which was located in a glen, or valley, near the village.
The village was incorporated in 1871 and was home to a variety of industries, including a grist mill, a saw mill, a cider mill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The village also had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the late 19th century, Glenwillow was a popular destination for wealthy Clevelanders looking to escape the city. The village was home to several large estates, including the Glenwillow Mansion, which was built in 1876 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Geography
Glenwillow is located at 41°20'25" North, 81°30'45" West (41.340278, -81.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
Glenwillow is home to several businesses, including a variety of manufacturing companies, a golf course, and a few restaurants. The village is also home to the headquarters of the Cleveland Metroparks, which is the largest park system in Ohio.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,717 people, 690 households, and 463 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,427.5 people per square mile (550.7/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 621.7 per square mile (239.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,938, and the median income for a family was $60,000. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $23,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
