Freeport Summary

Freeport, Ohio is a small village located in Harrison County, Ohio. It is situated on the banks of the Ohio River, approximately 25 miles south of Steubenville. The village has a population of approximately 500 people and is part of the Steubenville-Weirton Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Freeport was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was named after the nearby Freeport Ferry, which was established in 1812. The ferry was used to transport goods and people across the Ohio River.
