Franklin Summary
Franklin, Ohio is a city located in Warren County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The population was 11,771 at the 2010 census. Franklin is the county seat of Warren County.
History
Franklin was founded in 1796 by General William C. Schenck, a Revolutionary War veteran. The city was named after Benjamin Franklin. The city was incorporated in 1814.
In the early 19th century, Franklin was a center of industry, with several mills and factories. The city was also a major stop on the Underground Railroad.
Geography
Franklin is located at 39°33'25" North, 84°11'45" West (39.556944, -84.195278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.
Economy
Franklin is home to several large employers, including the Franklin City Schools, Franklin County Government, and the Franklin County Courthouse. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 11,771 people, 4,717 households, and 2,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,269.2 people per square mile (876.7/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 986.2 per square mile (380.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
