Deer Park Summary

History

Deer Park was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from Deerfield, Massachusetts. The town was named after the abundance of deer in the area. The first post office was established in 1848. The town was incorporated in 1951.

Geography

Deer Park is located at 39°13'25" North, 84°27'45" West (39.223611, -84.4625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

Deer Park is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Cincinnati-based Procter & Gamble.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,746 people, 2,521 households, and 1,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,619.2 people per square mile (1,011.2/km2). There were 2,637 housing units at an average density of 1,192.2 per square mile (459.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 2,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
