Darke County Summary
Darke County is located in the western part of the U.S. state of Ohio. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area and is bordered by Mercer County to the north, Preble County to the east, Montgomery County to the south, and Miami County to the west. The county seat is Greenville, and the largest city is Union City. As of the 2010 census, the population was 52,959.
History
Darke County was formed in 1809 from parts of Miami and Shelby counties. It was named after William Darke, a Revolutionary War hero who served as a major general in the Ohio militia. The county was originally part of the Northwest Territory and was part of the Virginia Military District.
The first settlers in the county were mostly of German and Swiss descent, and the county was largely agricultural. The county was home to several Native American tribes, including the Miami, Shawnee, and Wyandot.
Geography
Darke County is located in the western part of Ohio, and is bordered by Mercer County to the north, Preble County to the east, Montgomery County to the south, and Miami County to the west. The county has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 574 square miles is land and 2 square miles is water.
The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern and western parts. The highest point in the county is located in the northern part, at an elevation of 1,068 feet. The county is drained by the Great Miami River, which flows through the county from north to south.
Economy
Darke County has a diverse economy, with a mix of manufacturing, agriculture, and services. The county is home to several large employers, including Honda of America, which has a manufacturing plant in the county, and the Greenville City School District, which is the largest employer in the county.
Agriculture is a major part of the economy, with corn, soybeans, and wheat being the main crops. The county is also home to several dairy farms, as well as poultry and hog farms.

As of the 2010 census, there were 52,959 people, 20,845 households, and 14,845 families living in the county. The population density was 92.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 97.3% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.

About 8.7% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
