Bedford Heights is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland and is part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Area. The population was estimated to be 24,813 in 2019.
History
Bedford Heights was first settled in 1810 by a group of settlers from Bedford, Massachusetts. The area was originally known as Bedford Township, and was incorporated as a village in 1921. In 1951, the village was incorporated as a city.
Geography
Bedford Heights is located at 41°24'25" North, 81°30'45" West (41.406944, -81.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles, of which 8.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.
Economy
Bedford Heights is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is home to several large employers, including the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and the Cleveland Metroparks.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 24,813 people, 9,845 households, and 6,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,068.2 people per square mile (1,183.3/km2). There were 10,541 housing units at an average density of 1,297.3 per square mile (499.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 25.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 9,845 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $41,813 versus $30,917 for females.
