St Marys Summary
St Marys is a city located in Camden County, Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Camden County and is located on the St. Marys River, which forms the border between Georgia and Florida. The city is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is located about 30 miles (48 km) north of Jacksonville, Florida. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 17,121.
History
The area around St Marys was first inhabited by the Timucua Indians, who were the original inhabitants of the area. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century, and the city was officially founded in 1787. The city was named after the St. Marys River, which was named after the Virgin Mary.
The city was an important port during the 19th century, and it was the site of a major naval base during the Civil War. The city was also the site of a major battle during the Seminole Wars.

St Marys is located at 30°45'N 81°32'W (30.75, -81.53). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 10.9 square miles (28.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.
Economy
St Marys is a major port city and is home to a number of industries, including shipbuilding, seafood processing, and tourism. The city is also home to a number of military installations, including Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, which is the largest submarine base in the United States.

As of the 2010 census, there were 17,121 people, 6,845 households, and 4,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,564.2 people per square mile (604.7/km2). There were 7,845 housing units at an average density of 717.7 per square mile (277.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 19.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
There were 6,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $50,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $27,945 for females.
