Soperton Summary

Soperton is a city located in Treutlen County, Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Treutlen County and is part of the Vidalia Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 2,151.

History

Soperton was founded in 1883 by the Georgia General Assembly as the county seat of Treutlen County. The city was named after William Soper, a local landowner who donated the land for the city. The city was incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Soperton was a thriving agricultural center, with cotton, corn, and peanuts being the main crops. The city was also home to several sawmills and lumber companies.
In the 1950s, the city began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities. The city's population continued to decline until the late 1990s, when it began to experience a resurgence.

Geography

Soperton is located at 32°51'25" North, 82°25'17" West (32.857, -82.421). The city is situated in the southeastern corner of Treutlen County, near the Oconee River.

Soperton's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several farms that produce cotton, corn, peanuts, and other crops. The city is also home to several sawmills and lumber companies.
In addition, the city is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,151 people, 845 households, and 545 families residing in the city. The population density was 511.2 people per square mile. There were 945 housing units at an average density of 226.2 per square mile.
