History

Leesburg was founded in 1827 and named after General Robert E. Lee. It was originally known as "Lee's Crossroads" and was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1864. The town was incorporated in 1871 and has been the county seat of Lee County since 1873.

Geography

Leesburg is located at 32°45'25" North, 84°7'25" West (32.756944, -84.123611). The town is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests. The town is located on the Flint River, which is a major tributary of the Chattahoochee River.

Economy

Leesburg's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller businesses. The town is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,945 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the town. The population density was 703.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 65.2% White, 30.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 18.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
