History

Iron City was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Donalsonville. The settlers were looking for a place to build a new town and chose the area around the Flint River. The town was named Iron City because of the abundance of iron ore in the area.
The town quickly grew and by the late 1800s, it had become a thriving community. The town was home to several businesses, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a cotton gin, and a blacksmith shop. The town also had a school, a post office, and a church.
In the early 1900s, Iron City began to decline. The sawmill and gristmill closed and the population began to dwindle. The town was nearly abandoned by the 1950s.
In the late 1970s, Iron City began to experience a resurgence. The town was revitalized by the construction of a new bridge over the Flint River and the opening of a new industrial park. The industrial park brought new jobs to the area and the population began to grow again.
