Franklin Summary

Franklin, Georgia is a small city located in Heard County, Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Heard County and is located approximately 50 miles south of Atlanta. The population of Franklin was 1,845 at the 2010 census, up from 1,619 at the 2000 census.

History

Franklin was founded in 1820 and named after Benjamin Franklin. It was originally part of the Creek Indian Nation, but was ceded to the United States in 1821. The city was incorporated in 1823 and was the county seat of Heard County.
In the late 19th century, Franklin was a major center for the production of cotton and other agricultural products. The city was also home to several manufacturing plants, including a cotton mill, a sawmill, and a gristmill.

Geography

Franklin is located at 33°14'25" North, 85°7'25" West (33.240278, -85.123611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

Franklin’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large farms, including a cotton farm, a dairy farm, and a poultry farm. The city is also home to several manufacturing plants, including a cotton mill, a sawmill, and a gristmill.
The city is also home to several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses. The city is served by the Heard County School System, which includes two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 830.2 people per square mile (319.9/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 368.3 per square mile (142.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 17.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 16.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
