History

Douglas was founded in 1855 by William D. Wightman, a planter from South Carolina. The city was named after Stephen A. Douglas, a U.S. Senator from Illinois and the Democratic Party's nominee for President in 1860. The city was incorporated in 1871 and became the county seat of Coffee County in 1872.
Douglas was a major railroad hub in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city was home to the Douglas and Birmingham Railroad, which connected the city to Albany, Georgia, and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, which connected the city to Savannah, Georgia. The city was also home to the Douglas and Coffee County Railroad, which connected the city to Waycross, Georgia.

Geography

Douglas is located at 31°29'45" North, 82°51'45" West (31.495833, -82.862500). The city is situated in the southeastern part of the state, approximately 50 miles north of the Florida border.
The city has a total area of 8.3 square miles, of which 8.2 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water. Douglas is located in the Okefenokee Swamp region of Georgia and is surrounded by pine forests.
