Cuthbert is a small city located in Randolph County, Georgia, United States. It is the county seat of Randolph County and is located in the southwestern part of the state. The population of Cuthbert was 2,817 at the 2010 census.

History

Cuthbert was founded in 1831 and named after the Reverend Dr. Cuthbert W. Pound, a prominent Methodist minister. The city was incorporated in 1833 and was the county seat of Randolph County. The city was a major trading center for the surrounding area and was the site of the first cotton gin in the county.
During the Civil War, Cuthbert was the site of a major battle between Union and Confederate forces. The Battle of Cuthbert was fought on April 16, 1865 and resulted in a Confederate victory.

Geography

Cuthbert is located at 31°51'25" North, 84°51'25" West (31.856944, -84.856944). The city is situated in the southwestern part of the state, about 20 miles (32 km) north of the Florida border.

The economy of Cuthbert is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, including a paper mill, a furniture factory, and a plastics plant. The city also has a number of retail stores and restaurants.

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,817 people, 1,093 households, and 690 families residing in the city. The population density was 672.2 people per square mile (259.3/km2). There were 1,223 housing units at an average density of 291.3 per square mile (112.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 54.2% White, 41.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who were 65 years of age or older.
