Treutlen County Summary
Treutlen County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. It is part of the Dublin-Laurens Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,885, making it the second-least populous county in Georgia. The county seat is Soperton.
History
Treutlen County was created in 1917 from portions of Emanuel, Montgomery, and Laurens counties. It was named for John Adam Treutlen, the first governor of Georgia.
Geography
Treutlen County is located in the southeastern corner of Georgia, and is bordered by Emanuel County to the north, Montgomery County to the east, Laurens County to the south, and Johnson County to the west. The county has a total area of 246 square miles, of which 244 square miles is land and 2 square miles (0.8%) is water.
The county is located in the Ogeechee River basin, and is drained by the Oconee River. The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part. The highest point is located in the northern part of the county, near the Emanuel County line, and has an elevation of 590 feet.
Economy
The economy of Treutlen County is largely based on agriculture. The county is home to several large farms, and the main crops grown are cotton, corn, soybeans, and peanuts. The county also has a large timber industry, and is home to several sawmills.
The county also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small factories located in the county. The largest employer in the county is the Georgia-Pacific Corporation, which operates a paper mill in Soperton.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 6,885 people, 2,541 households, and 1,817 families residing in the county. The population density was 28.4 people per square mile. There were 2,945 housing units at an average density of 12.1 per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% White, 28.7% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. 2.3% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the county, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $32,917. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the county was $13,917. About 17.7% of families and 21.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 20.2% of those age 65 or over.
