Stewart County Summary

Stewart County is a county located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,058. The county seat is Lumpkin. The county was created on December 23, 1830.

History

Stewart County was created in 1830 from portions of Randolph and Early counties. It was named for Daniel Stewart, a Revolutionary War soldier and a member of the Georgia General Assembly. The county was originally part of the Creek Nation, and the Creek Indians were the first inhabitants of the area.
The first white settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. The county was developed for cotton plantations, and the county seat of Lumpkin was established in 1832. The county was the site of several Civil War battles, including the Battle of Lumpkin's Mill in 1864.

Geography

Stewart County is located in the southwestern corner of Georgia, bordered by Randolph County to the north, Webster County to the east, Quitman County to the south, and Clay County, Alabama to the west. The county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 439 square miles is land and 2 square miles (0.5%) is water.
The county is located in the Upper Flint River sub-basin of the ACF River Basin (Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin). The Flint River forms the western border of the county. The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part of the county.

Economy

The economy of Stewart County is largely based on agriculture. The county is home to several large farms, which produce cotton, corn, soybeans, and other crops. The county also has a large timber industry, with several sawmills and wood-processing plants.
The county also has a growing tourism industry, with several historic sites, such as the Lumpkin Historic District, the Stewart County Courthouse, and the Stewart County Museum.

As of the 2010 census, there were 6,058 people, 2,093 households, and 1,521 families living in the county. The population density was 14 people per square mile. There were 2,521 housing units at an average density of 6 per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 68.2% White, 28.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. 2.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The median income for a household in the county was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,917. The per capita income for the county was $14,945. About 19.2% of families and 24.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.2% of those under age 18 and 20.2% of those age 65 or over.
