Quitman County Summary

Quitman County is located in the southwestern corner of Georgia, and is part of the Valdosta Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county was created in 1858 from parts of Randolph and Stewart counties, and was named for John A. Quitman, a former governor of Mississippi. The county seat is Georgetown.

Geography

Quitman County covers an area of 441 square miles, of which 437 square miles is land and 4 square miles is water. The county is located in the Coastal Plain region of Georgia, and is bordered by Randolph County to the north, Stewart County to the east, Brooks County to the south, and Lanier County to the west. The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part. The Flint River runs through the county, and there are several small lakes and ponds scattered throughout.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, the population of Quitman County was 2,513, a decrease of 8.3% from the 2000 census. The population density was 5.7 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 68.3% White, 28.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
