Polk County, Georgia is located in the northwest corner of the state, and is part of the larger Atlanta metropolitan area. It is bordered by Floyd County to the north, Bartow County to the east, Paulding County to the south, and Haralson County to the west. Geography

Polk County covers an area of approximately 437 square miles, and is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The terrain is mostly hilly, with some flat areas in the northern part of the county. The highest point in the county is Pine Mountain, which rises to an elevation of 1,890 feet. The county is drained by the Etowah River, which flows through the center of the county. Other major waterways include the Oostanaula River, the Coosa River, and the Little River.
The climate of Polk County is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is around 63°F, and the average annual precipitation is around 50 inches.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, Polk County had a population of 41,475. The racial makeup of the county was 79.2% White, 15.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
The median household income in the county was $37,845, and the median family income was $45,945. The per capita income was $19,945. About 15.2% of the population was below the poverty line.

Economy

The economy of Polk County is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The county is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller food processing plants. Other major industries include textiles, furniture, and wood products.
The county is also home to several large employers, including the Polk County School System, Polk Medical Center, and the Polk County Board of Commissioners.

History

Polk County was created in 1851 from parts of Floyd, Paulding, and Bartow counties. The county was named after James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States. The county seat was originally located in Cedartown, but was moved to Rockmart in 1871.
