It is part of the Albany Metropolitan Statistical Area and is bordered by Worth County to the north, Dougherty County to the east, Colquitt County to the south, and Baker County to the west. The county seat is Camilla, and the largest city is Pelham. As of the 2010 census, the population was 23,498.

History

Mitchell County was created in 1857 from portions of Baker, Dougherty, and Worth counties. It was named for David Brydie Mitchell, a former Georgia governor. The county was largely rural until the 1950s, when the construction of the Flint River Dam and the Albany-Camilla Highway brought new economic opportunities to the area.

Geography

Mitchell County covers an area of 441 square miles, of which 437 square miles is land and 4 square miles is water. The county is located in the Flint River Valley, and is mostly flat with some rolling hills. The Flint River forms the eastern border of the county, and the Kinchafoonee Creek forms the western border. The county is home to several state parks, including Reed Bingham State Park, which is located on the Flint River.
