Heard County is a county located in the west-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,834. The county seat is Franklin. The county was created on December 22, 1830. Heard County is part of the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Geography
Heard County is located in the west-central part of Georgia, approximately 50 miles southwest of Atlanta. It is bordered by Carroll County to the north, Coweta County to the east, Troup County to the south, and Carroll and Haralson counties to the west. The county has a total area of 246 square miles, of which 245 square miles is land and 1.2 square miles (0.5%) is water.
The majority of Heard County is located in the Upper Tallapoosa River sub-basin of the ACT River Basin (Alabama-Coosa-Tallapoosa River Basin). The southeastern corner of the county is located in the Middle Chattahoochee River-Walter F. George Lake sub-basin of the ACF River Basin (Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin).
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 10,845 people, 3,945 households, and 2,945 families residing in the county. The population density was 44 people per square mile (17/km^2). There were 4,323 housing units at an average density of 18 per square mile (7/km^2). The racial makeup of the county was 79.17% White, 18.90% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 1.63% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 3,945 households, out of which 34.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.90% were married couples living together, 12.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.50% were non-families. 22.00% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the county, the population was spread out, with 26.90% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.90 males.
