Greene County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. It is part of the Central Savannah River Area and is located in the east-central part of the state. As of the 2010 census, the population was 15,994. The county seat is Greensboro.

Geography

Greene County is located in the east-central part of Georgia, approximately 90 miles east of Atlanta. It is bordered by Oglethorpe County to the north, Taliaferro County to the east, Hancock County to the south, and Morgan and Putnam counties to the west. The county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 437 square miles is land and 4.2 square miles (1.0%) is water.
The county is located in the Piedmont region of Georgia, with the majority of the county being flat or gently rolling terrain. The northern part of the county is part of the Oconee National Forest, and the southern part is part of the Oconee River watershed. The county is drained by several creeks, including Beaverdam Creek, Big Creek, and Little River.

History

Greene County was created in 1786 from part of Washington County. It was named for General Nathanael Greene, a hero of the American Revolution. The county was originally part of the Creek Nation, and the area was home to several Native American tribes, including the Creek, Cherokee, and Chickasaw.
The county was developed for cotton plantations in the antebellum period, and the county seat of Greensboro was established in 1803. The county was the site of several Civil War battles, including the Battle of Griswoldville in 1864.
