Gordon County Summary

Gordon County is located in the northwestern part of the state of Georgia, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It is bordered by Whitfield County to the north, Murray County to the east, Floyd County to the south, and Bartow County to the west. The county seat is Calhoun, and the county is named for William Washington Gordon, a prominent Georgia politician and railroad executive.

Geography

Gordon County covers an area of approximately 437 square miles, with a population of 54,822 as of the 2010 census. The terrain is mostly hilly, with the highest point being 1,890 feet above sea level. The county is drained by the Coosawattee River, which flows through the center of the county. The county is home to several state parks, including Red Top Mountain State Park, Fort Mountain State Park, and Chief Vann House Historic Site.

Climate

Gordon County has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 61°F, with an average high of 79°F in July and an average low of 43°F in January. The average annual precipitation is 51 inches, with the wettest month being June, when an average of 6.5 inches of rain falls.

The county is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller food processing plants. As of the 2010 census, the population of Gordon County was 54,822, with a population density of 124 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 87.3% White, 8.7% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.

Gordon County is served by the Gordon County School District, which operates 15 elementary schools, four middle schools, and three high schools. The county is also home to several private schools, including Gordon Central High School, Gordon County Christian Academy, and Gordon County Academy.
