Douglas County Summary
Douglas County, Georgia is located in the northwestern part of the state, just south of Atlanta. It is bordered by Carroll County to the north, Fulton County to the east, and Cobb County to the south. The county seat is Douglasville, and the county is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.
History
Douglas County was created in 1870 from parts of Carroll and Cobb Counties. It was named for Stephen A. Douglas, a U.S. Senator from Illinois who was the Democratic Party’s nominee for President in 1860. The county was originally home to the Creek and Cherokee Native American tribes, and the area was part of the Cherokee Nation until the Indian Removal Act of 1830.
The county was largely rural until the 1950s, when the population began to grow rapidly due to the expansion of Atlanta. The county’s population doubled between 1950 and 1960, and it has continued to grow since then.
